Product description Fourth "proper" album from 1998 includes "A Perfect Day Elise" and "The Wind". Amazon.com Each of Harvey's previous albums has been a distinct affair as she took steps forward in not only forging her sound but also exploring the wealthy veins of rock & roll. So on first listen, Is This Desire? almost disappoints; it's very close to the same dark, woozy, and bluesy musical territory she staked out on To Bring You My Love . But it's been said that though good stories can be read once, great stories must be read twice, and, like great literature, this album deserves repeated listenings to appreciate its beautiful complexities and subtle shadings. A recommendation: Spend a few nonstop hours with Is This Desire? It will change you. --Tod Nelson Review ... Desire seethes with hypnotic power. -- Entertainement Weekly Is This Desire? Is Harvey's fifth album. Incredibly, she's pulled off a double magic act: Her third-person tales are so enticing you won't miss her, and--this should be impossible--she's become more refined while retaining raw power. There are more contempo club textures here than the blues riffs she was firing off when we met her, and her voice is still building on the operatic moves of 1995's To Bring You My Love . -- Spin Is This Desire? is as concerned with musical dislocation as it is with the songs. And though a few old Harvey trademarks do eventually emerge from producer Flood's impenetrable mix ... you're more likely to catch the Residents traipsing through the mix than you are "Sheela Na Gig." -- Alternative Press A revelatory mix of classic rock, roadhouse R&B and cutting- edge dance music, Desire transcends the dark, brooding thoughts that no doubt inspired it. -- People Polly Jean Harvey simultaneously falls back on the elemental blues grounding that sets her apart from most of her generation while zooming ahead into trip-hop and techno. Whether whispering or keening, Harvey taps into a rich, mythic vein of expression. -- The Los Angeles Times Structurally, linguistically and thematically, the songs are Ms. Harvey's starkest ever, and the music demands to be met halfway. -- The New York Times With Is This Desire? ... PJ takes a step down artistically. Harvey muddles the stark near perfection she achieved three years ago with stale programmed beats and synthesizer cacophony. Her melodies aren't as fully realized, and the new lyrics, too, seem fluffy compared to the brave exploration of grand themes--sex and sin, blasphemy and redemption--that has marked her past triumphs. -- Vibe See more
