Product Description Masterfully recorded with full orchestra all produced, arranged and conducted by the legendary Peter Matz (i.e. Barbra Streisand etc.). Features great selections of your popular classic Broadway standards. Amazon.com The title Different Stages certainly describes the career of the multitalented Sam Harris, the singer-writer-actor who has distinguished himself in a variety of mediums all over the world. This album was recorded in 1994, about when he was earning a Drama Desk nomination for his role as Doody in Tommy Tune's Grease, and accordingly, it celebrates the songs of Broadway. Sorry, fans, there's nothing from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but the too-brief 35 minutes does include some groundwork for his 1999 gospel album with an a cappella quintet rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," as well as the rousing "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" from Guys and Dolls. There are also some scrumptious ballads, including Harris's own "Never Will She Answer" (written with Bruce H. Newberg for Hurry! Hurry! Hollywood!), "A Quiet Thing" from Flora the Red Menace, and "Who Can I Turn To," which would be reprised with bombast on his 1997 standards album, also arranged and conducted by Peter Matz. (Hey, we got all the way through this review without mentioning Star Search!) --David Horiuchi Review "Sam Harris is one of Broadway's great exponents of vocal pyrotechnics. This block-buster rattles the rafters." -- Liz Smith "Sam Harris is part heart stealer, part soulman. He is a contemporary phenomenon." -- New York Post "When Sam sings...I find myself crying and laughing and applauding and knowing why I went into this business." -- Liza Minnelli The shear force of his charisma is mesmerizing; rousing one moment and heartbreaking the next. -- USA Today Unbelievable! Sam could make Jesus walk through the door! -- Oprah Winfrey When Sam sings...I find myself crying and laughing and applauding and knowing why I went into this business. -- Liza Minnelli, In Theatre Magazine About the Artist Sam received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations as well as the Drama Leagues Outstanding Performance nod for his role in Cy Colemans THE LIFE. He also appeared on Broadway in Tommy Tunes GREASE (Drama Desk nomination) and toured in the Broadway production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Sam has starred in productions of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, CABARET, HARD COPY (Drama-Logue Awards for writing & acting) and DIFFERENT HATS (Drama-Logue Award), and REVIVAL, (also self-penned). Sam splashed into the public eye on STAR SEARCH in its premiere season, leading him to a successful recording and concert career. His discography, which may be sampled at SamHarris.com, includes SAM HARRIS, SAM-I-AM, DIFFERENT STAGES, STANDARD TIME, THE BEST OF THE MOTOWN SESSIONS, REVIVAL, and now, ON THIS NIGHT. He also appears on a number of Broadway cast albums and as guest artist and compilation CDs. Sam has toured the country in concert to sold-out audiences including Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Universal Amphitheatre and Londons West End. He co-wrote the sit-com, DOWN TO EARTH, (which ran for 4 years) and the musical, HURRY! HURRY! HOLLYWOOD! (which he also directed) with Bruce H. Newberg. He also penned the critically acclaimed musical, HARD COPY. Sam has made appearances on numerous television shows and specials and in countless live productions. He recently completed work on the feature film, IN THE WEEDS, and continues to tour the country in concert. See more
