Product Description A Little World Music features solo guitar music recorded in an environment that successfully captures the pure sound of the classical & flamenco guitars used by Stefan. Review The recording itself is notable for its "natural" reproduction of the guitar, remarkably clean, free of compression, and a sonic perspective of being close to Stefan's guitar without feeling like your sitting right on top of it. This is a highly recommended CD. Stefan's considerable guitar talents and globetrotting compositions make it a winner! -- Neil Ruddish, 52nd Street Jazz Reviews, 1997 From the Label Fans of solo guitar music in a variety of styles would do themselves a favor to get a copy of this CD by Stefan Schyga, guitarist extraordinaire from the Telarc Jazz group La Vienta. This set of tunes, all penned by Stefan, is as intimate as it is filled with excitement. The tunes are for the most part based on a Spanish or Flamenco theme, but also tap into the sounds of South America and the Middle East. Hence, "A Little World Music". About the Artist Stefan Schyga, a native of Hildesheim, Germany, began studying classical violin at the age of eleven, when his music teacher let him know what an excellent ear he had, and that he should pick up an instrument like the violin. Stefan however also enjoyed the sound of the guitar and with the help of his brother Peter, already an accomplished guitarist, started playing the Guitar a year later. In 1977 he and his family moved to El Paso, where at the University of Texas he studied violin with Laurence Gibson and classical Guitar with Neil Pennington. During his early studies at the university he got exposed to instrumental guitar music. When he heard the Tarrega compositions, Capricho Arabe, and Recuerdos de Alhambra he knew this was something he really wanted to play. In his search for that style of music he came across something even more exciting and new to him: recordings of the great Flamenco guitarists Ramon Montoya, Sabicas and Paco de Lucia. "Now this is music", he thought. So when he returned to Germany in 1981 he started studying the Art of Flamenco Guitar. His teacher Christoph Sturm helped him understand Flamenco as a whole, by letting him listen to the great singers like Pepe de la Matrona and the footwork of dancers like Carmen Amaya. Seeing people like Paco de Lucia and Paco Pena perform only increased his musical drive. Stefan still had to make a living, however, so he joined the German Navy Band for his first professional gig and played electric guitar with them for two years. After this he joined the top-forty band "Melody Kiel" and worked his way through Germany playing less than satisfying music. Stefan decided that he wanted nothing more than to be a professional musician and to study violin and guitar. In 1984 he received a full scholarship from the University of Texas at El Paso and so returned to the USA to study. Of course he studied the required classical theory and repertoire on the guitar and violin, and played in local chamber groups and the University Symphony, but his biggest challenges came when he was invited to work with some of the legends in Flamenco. The first person to work with was the late Antonio Triana. Stefan often played for his dance classes (Rhythm Flamenco Guitar), and learned to be humble in understanding that this was the real Flamenco. He was finally good enough to be the guitarist for a production of the Antonio Triana Dance Company. What a thrill. During this time he also played for students of the Triana studio. Another great challenge came in 1991, when he had the chance to work for the great singer Enrique Montoya (Jarrito). Again humbled by the difficulty of playing for a singer Stefan excelled in his wish to play for this great artist. Together with the dancer Elsa Rosario they performed in Juarez, Chi. and at a concert at The University of Texas at El Paso. During these years Stefan kept writing instrumental music. His style is not pure flamenco, but rather a mixture of Latin styles. He never wanted to play one pure style, but instead take the music, techniques and rhythms and create a new and different sound. In 1989 he met Mario Otero and La Vienta was born. Three successful albums later (on Telarc International) their music still keeps growing. The Telarc albums: Jazzmenco, Night Dance & Forgotten Romance. Despite all these activities Stefan kept up with his traditional schooling and in 1991 earned his M.A. in music at the University of Texas, where he now serves on the faculty as a guitar teacher. In December of 1997 Stefan released his premiere Solo Compact Disk: A Little World Music. World renowned composer Joseph Packales comments on this CD: "Simply Beautiful". Since 1997 Stefan has recorded ad produced 6 more CDs for the Innovative Strings Label": The Acoustic World Ensemble, Paso Del Norte, Curt Warren, Nestor Ausqui, X.O. & Joseph Packales. See more
