Product Description Tosca: Performers and producers were brought together, with contemporary Rome as the setting for this live film, to create this unique and highly innovative version of Puccini's Tosca. Abandoning its theatrical roots, the opera was broadcast live by satellite around the world. And dispensing with theatrical sets, it was performed in the very Roman locations and at the very same times of day as Puccini had written into his score: in the 16th-century church of Sant Andrea della Valle, the nearby Palazzo Farnese (a magnificent 16th-century edifice that is now the French Embassy) and finally at Castel Sant'Angelo. But unlike the original, the backdrops were the real thing, not mere sets. And the timings of the three acts were staggered to translate Puccini's score into real time; the first at noon, the second at 8.15 pm the same day and the third at 6 am the following day. The story and characters of Tosca are largely fictional, but the trappings of satellite technology endowed this production with the same sense of partial reality as a TV news clip. The sharp focus of modern technology actually blurred the line between artistic creation and reality: even though the weather outside the church of Sant Andrea della Valle was overcast that day, it was sunny inside. Placido Domingo as Mario Cavaradossi, Catherine Malfitano as Floria Tosca, Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia; Zubin Mehta conducting the RAI Orchestra Sinfonica and Coro di Roma; cinematography by Vittorio Storaro; directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi. 1992 . 'Andrea Andermann s television production was simply a triumph' THE TIMES 'The staggered timing, the complex technology and the settings themselves made the production the first of its kind'. THE NEW YORK TIMES Manon Lescaut: 'Manon', wrote Puccini to his publisher Giulio Ricordi in 1889, 'is a heroine I believe in and therefore she cannot fail to win the heart of the public.' This turned out to be a truly prophetic statement since none of Puccini's other world successes were received on their first nights as rapturously as Manon Lescaut. The popularity of Puccini's great masterpiece has never waned and the highly acclaimed Götz Friedrich production at Covent Garden was hailed as an operatic milestone. Two of the world's leading stars - Kiri Te Kanawa and Placido Domingo - head a strong cast conducted by the brilliant Italian conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. La Fanciulla del West: Puccini's penultimate opera is based on a play by David Belasco set at the height of the notorious California gold rush. The composer took three years to complete the work, which, for him, marked a new stylish departure. With more modern harmonic combinations and local melodies, Puccini pieced together a far larger canvas than anything he had tackled before. In this recording, Piero Faggioni's highly detailed staging is matched by Ken Adam's superbly atmospheric sets. Carol Neblett sings the role of Minnie The Girl of the Gold West; Placido Domingo is as ignitable as ever in the role of Dick Johnson, alias the bandit, Ramirez, and Silvano Carroli sings the sinister sheriff, Jack Rance. Conducted by Nello Santi. Review (This Manon) ranks with the best. --Joe McLellan, Amazon.com One of opera's events of the year might just take place in your living room. A few months ago, Culture Monster got word that a new multi-volume DVD set dedicated to Plácido Domingo was in the works. 'Roles, Vol. 1: Puccini' is a three-disc set that contains performances of Tosca, Manon Lescaut and La Fanciulla del West. Kultur Films, the publisher of the box set, said the volume features the 1992 television film broadcast of Tosca that Domingo filmed on locations throughout Rome with Catherine Malfitano and Ruggero Raimondi, with Zubin Mehta leading the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of Rome RAI. Manon Lescaut stars Domingo and Kiri Te Kanawa in the title role, with Giuseppe Sinopoli conducting the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. La Fanciulla features Domingo alongside Carol Neblett, with Nello Santi conducting the same orchestra. --David Ng, Los Angeles Times
