The reduced shank drill bit, also called a Silver and Deming drill bit, has a shank that is smaller in diameter than its shaft, permitting drilling with a 1/2" drill chuck. A heavy duty nitride treatment on high-speed steel (HSS) provides hardness for wear resistance, and the combined black and gold oxide finish resists corrosion and increases the hardness of the drill bit for additional wear resistance. The self-centering 118-degree split point penetrates hard material without a pilot hole. The round shank with flats ground onto three sides reduces slippage of the bit when used in drill chucks.
