Original sixpence coin from Great Britain dated 1966 from so called pre-decimal period. Sixpence was 1/2 of a shilling, which was 1/20 of a pound sterling. Coin design incorporates leek, rose, thistle and shamrock , which are symbols of Wales, England (Tudor dynasty ) , Scotland, and Ireland. Sixpence coin is a traditional wedding gift for a bride. As an old nursery rhyme goes: "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Sixpence for her Shoe." The tradition of gifting a sixpence to the bride dates back to the 1600\'s, when it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give his bride a piece of silver as a gift. This was symbolically represented by a sixpence coin. Coins from 1947 and after are made from copper nickel alloy.
