Ilex paraguariensis. Paraguay tea or Yerba mate is a South American evergreen tree in the holly family. Its leaves are made into a popular energizing drink in much of South America. It is comparable to black tea or coffee in its use. The traditional way to drink yerba mate is to pour hot water over the ground twigs and leaves that have been placed into a specially formed vessel made from a dried gourd. A bombilla or metal straw with a built in filter is used to drink the liquid. Native to many areas of South America including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Can grow to a height of 40 feet, but in cultivation is usually pruned to 12 - 24 feet in height. Can easily be kept at a much shorter height of 3-5 feet. Zones 9a-11. Likes rich moist soil.
