For 1, 5, and 10 pound quantities, lengths vary from 1/2 - 13 inches in length. On average, there are 45-60 pieces per pound. This cholla has been power washed in 220-260 F water ONLY. The pieces do have imperfections and you should not expect whole, perfect pieces. Shards indicates: pieces are broken, have rough edges, cut at weird angles, etc. This cholla was collected in a natural (no chemicals used in the area, etc) area. It has not been treated in any way. No thorns!! Cholla is great for a variety of things--reptiles, hermit crabs, chinchillas, rabbits, aquariums, pleco, shrimp, birds, crafts, air plants, creating biofilm...the list goes on! Just know that when you buy from me--I would never send you anything that I would not personally use in my own setup. **Since cholla comes from the great outdoors, each piece will be unique--so various coloring, knots, curves, etc. should be expected.** To prepare the wood before placing in an aquarium or pet habitat, boil it or soak it in hot water to remove any native soils that may be present, reduce excess tannins and to make the wood sink. The time will vary in regards to how long this process will take—it could be hours, it could be weeks, everyone has different results (*DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK--THIS PROCESS CAN RUIN THE WOOD!*) For proper husbandry information for hermit crabs, please visit Land Hermit Crab Owners Society on Facebook!
