“Fair Winds and Following Seas”: These Hand Embroidered USN / USMC, United States Naval Flight Officer “Wings of Gold”, are made from metal bullion, and is truly a work of art. As this craft developed, it reached a remarkable level of skill in the Middle Ages, when a style called “Opus Anglicanum” was developed in England and used extensively in church vestments and tapestries. After this period, it was also used frequently in the clothing and furnishings of the royalty and nobility throughout Europe, and still later on, for military and other regalia. Today this needlework is a fairy uncommon skill, even among embroiderers who work at other creative styles; it is now mostly used for the highest quality church vestments and art embroidery due to both the expense of the materials and the time required to create the specialty pieces. Our buyers have traveled the seven seas in search of cruise worthy “gee-dunk” that our customers have come to expect. Our small WESTPAC shop, that produces these treasured masterpieces, is truly unique and the artisans retain a level of handiwork rarely seen in today’s mechanized world. New generation designers continue to draw upon ancient skills, forms and materials to make traditional insignias of distinction. Many traditions struggle to survive in their original form, as technology, tastes and lifestyles change.
