Presented is a fantastic quality antique cut glass and Gorham sterling silver inkwell, dated 1894. The body of the inkwell is beautifully cut in a very flowing Art Nouveau style, appropriate for the time to which it dates, and the glass itself is quite heavy and thick. The smoothness and fluid nature of the design would ordinarily suggest pressed/molded glass, but there are no mold lines, this is cut glass, and very skillfully done. The sterling lid is hand chased with a classical design of shells and C scrolls, surrounding a monogram of AHR done in flowing script.

The collar of the lid is stamped with the Gorham maker's mark as well as sterling, a product number S1943, and a year mark for 1894.

This piece is in great overall condition. There are a couple of dings to the exterior of the silver lid, particularly where it has struck the glass when opened, but no serious dents. There is possible an old repair near the hinge, but it's difficult to say for sure. The glass is in excellent shape, with only tiny nicks/fleabites to the bottom edge, and standard shelf wear to the underside, commensurate with age. No serious chips, no cracks, no discoloration.

The base measures about 3 3/8 inches square, and the height is about 4 inches to the top of the lid.

This inkwell weighs 850 grams, or 1.9 pounds.
