Meissen Porcelain Cup and Saucer Cobalt Blue Gold Scale Relief Germany Vintage

This vintage cup and saucer was made by Meissen, Europe’s oldest porcelain manufacturer, founded in Saxony in 1710. Both pieces carry the famous underglaze blue crossed swords mark with “Made in Germany,” along with incised model numbers. The cup also has a painter’s mark.

The pieces are covered in a textured, overlapping scale relief pattern, with each white scale outlined in gold and set off by cobalt blue accents. The saucer’s concentric rows of scales radiate out from a gilded center well with a white cup ring trimmed in gold. The cup has a gilt foot, a gilded rim and an ornate gold handle. The rich gilding, deep cobalt and sculpted surface create a dazzling, jewel-like effect.

This is a striking example of Meissen craftsmanship. It’s an ideal piece for collectors of fine European porcelain, cabinet cups, and blue and gold tableware, and it makes an elegant display or gift.
