Power supplies, even within the same brand and series, can have variations in wattage, connectors, and physical dimensions. It is therefore crucial to verify the specific requirements and compatibility with your system before purchasing or replacing a power supply unit.
A common misconception about power supply ratings is that they reflect the overall quality and power output. That isn’t always true. The Watts or W rating on a power supply indicates the maximum power that it is able to deliver. (Tip: If the Wattage is not given, Simply multiply the Amperage (A) with the Voltage (V). E.g.: 30A x 5V =150W). A PSU is tasked with converting AC (Alternating Current) to DC (Direct Current) to power your components - but it will never convert 100% of the AC to DC. For example, a PSU that is rated at 125W will provide, at most, 100WDC; the remaining 25 watts being transformed into heat. Moreover, at the lower and higher ends of the spectrum, PSUs really struggle with efficiency. This is why it is important to keep a buffer for the safety of your system so as to ensure that your PSU will not strike out when trying to draw enough power to your components. Current wisdom is that, no matter the build, keep a 20% buffer. You can work this out quite easily by adding each component’s individual power draw, then buying something with a 20% greater wattage.
PFC stands for Power Fan speed Control. It is a 3-pin 2-wire connector used to monitor the speed of the internal intake fan through the motherboard BIOS or through monitoring software included with a motherboard. The PFC connector should only be used to plug in a 3-pin socket. Unlike other fan connectors, it is NOT used to supply power to that fan. It is only to supply a signal to the motherboard from the PSU internal fan to confirm that it is actually running. It is simply another way for the motherboard's BIOS to check that all the system cooling features are working.
