Here's an early hand blown glass inkwell from the 1830s or 1840s with its original brass press down top that has holes in the top for sprinkling fine sand or pounce....In the early days of writing with quill pens, the ink would often splotch or run. This sander would have been kept handy to dispense fine sand or pounce to dry up the excess ink, or to "erase" a mistake. ....The bottle is hand blown or hand pressed in mold...flat smooth bottom....ground sheared mouth...opaque white glass...1 1/2"tall (with lid) x 1 3/4"square...Excellent shiny nice condition with no chips or damage. A nice clean inkwell with no haze. The pewter or brass shaker top has a ring of embossed fruit & flowers...It was designed to fit snug so that it would not fall off when shaking out the sand/pounce....and yet with a twisting pulling motion it was easy to remove for refilling....Rare to find in opal glass!...
