If you are looking for that fat, rich, many-textured sound in your recordings, I suggest this 2 channel tube microphone preamp by the great Ampex company, made about 1965. Simply plug your mics in the back and go! This contains the pair of very rare 60db microphone preamps, which feature Beyer of Germany transformers. That might be too much gain for some many mics (great for ribbons), but you can use a Shure in line mic attenuator if it is too much gain. Perfect for ribbon mics just as it is. Great American made tubes inside. Works fine, but the lamps may be out, which is no big deal to replace.
This unit weighs about 20 pounds, and you will have to experiment to get the gain set for your mic (unless it's a ribbon). They made hundreds of these electronics, but the Beyer micpres are found in much fewer numbers. This sounds great as it is, but of course if you update the caps etc it will sound ever better. So much fatter than modern tube pres due to the high quality Ampex transformers.
Since it is a 60+ year old vintage unit, I guarantee only that it will power up for you. It worked fine for me, but you may need to upgrade some of the components.
