Vintage PERUVIAN FOLK ART WEDDING PLAQUE/ Ayacucho, Mid-20th Century, STAMPED

On offer is a richly expressive hand-built ceramic wall plaque in the tradition of the Ayacucho region of Peru.

Arched, polychrome plaque depicts a Franciscan friar presiding over a wedding ceremony, flanked by a joyful couple amid stylized flowers and birds. Every element of the scene carries meaning — in Andean folk tradition, the flowers symbolize joy and abundance, and the small birds (pajaritos) represent the soul and faithful love, making them a particularly apt presence in a wedding scene.

The imagery is rendered in the distinctive visual language of Andean folk art, where pre-Columbian artistic conventions — flat, frontal faces with inlaid cobalt blue glaze eyes, bold graphic outlines, and stylized natural forms — blend seamlessly with Catholic subject matter brought by the Spanish. This syncretism is the living heart of Peruvian folk art, and this piece embodies it beautifully.

The arched slab form with scalloped border is hand-built and painted in rich polychrome glazes — mustard, burnt sienna, teal, cobalt, and brick red — all of which hold up vibrantly. The unglazed reverse bears a series of impressed cruciform/rosette cartouche stamps (workshop marks). There is a small hanging hole drilled at the top center, making the piece ready to display. Plaque measures approximately 13–14 inches wide by 8–9 inches tall.

Plaque is in very good condition for its age. Although a minor hairline crack is visible on the reverse running from the top edge downward, it cannot be seen from the front and does not affect structural integrity. I find expected edge chips consistent with age and handling of vintage redware. There is no evidence of prior repairs or restoration.
