"William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), one of the great American poets of the past century, was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, which he made his lifelong home and the center of his medical practice. As a poet, Williams knew H.D., Ezra Pound, and William Butler Yeats. As a pediatrician he was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School he knew the working poor, many of them immigrants, and he observed them closely.
Williams's literary style, stripped down and impressionistic, is especially striking in his short fiction. He published three books of short stories during his lifetime and a towering longer story, "The Farmer's Daughter." These were subsequently issued as THE COLLECTED STORIES OF WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS, with an Introduction by Sherwin B. Nuland, M.D., himself an acclaimed writer and the chairman of the Editorial Board of the Classics of Medicine Library. We are honored to add this great volume to the Library."
