Here is a great example of the forgotten and overlooked ‘suitcase stereo’ model Magnavox Astro Sonic Germanium Transistor Amplifier that has been lovingly rebuilt. Single pair output transistors, driven by interstage transformers delivers a warm, tube-like sound. Complete overhaul with a mild hot rod touch to juke out a little more power and finesse: Modern Schottky rectifier diodes along with greatly increased power supply filter capacitance delivers additional voltage and headroom over original, ‘blueprint’ circuit rebuild, with added output capacitance to extend low-frequency response along with trim balance to equalize feedback and per channel response. Controls from left to right are tone, volume and balance. No power Switch - just plug it in and it is on. Finishing touches include a three-prong IEC grounded power entry module (a must have for any amplifier with an exposed metal chassis), custom 3D printed multi-shade enclosure and trim rings. Does 1 to 1-1/2 watts per channel into an 8 ohm load at a touch under 1% THD. Good bandwidth - minus 3dB points are at 30 Hz and 18 KHz. Tested but not benchmarked with 4 and 16 ohm loads - drives both just fine. Sounds way better than it has any right to. No hum, no hiss, just good punch mojo from a bygone era.
