This beautiful pocket rosary has a 7/8" oval St Gregory the Great medal and a 1-1/2" tall silver toned Liturgy Crucifix. Both medal and crucifix were made in Italy; the chaplet itself was handmade by me in our home in the USA.

All eleven beads are genuine Czech glass.  The Our Father bead is a purple glass pearl, and the ten Hail Mary beads are faceted and fire polished Czech glass in alternating gold and amethyst purple.

St Gregory the Great was born about the year 540 into a wealthy family and grew up during a time of turmoil as Rome suffered a time of invasions and plague.  He was well educated, excelling in law, and served as Prefect of Rome at 33.  After his father died he turned the family villa in Rome into a monastery and became a monk. Pope Pelagius II made him Papal ambassador to the Imperial court in Constantinople.  In 590 he was chosen pope by acclamation which he reluctantly accepted, as he preferred the monastic life.  During his papacy he referred to himself as a servant of God and emphasized missionary work to bring more people to Jesus.  Pope Gregory was well known for his alms to the poor, and he gave quite generously of the riches donated to the Church by the wealthy people of Rome. Everything from money to land was given to the poor in some fashion. He made clear to his subordinates that their duty was to relieve the distress faced by the poor.  He ordered his clergy to go out into the streets to find and care for the poor in person. Any clergy who unwilling to go into the streets and help the poor were replaced. Assets of the Church were liquidated to provide income for alms. He placed deacons in all parishes and tasked them with giving alms to the poor.  When famine hit Rome, he ordered the food produced on Church property to be sent to Rome, saving many lives. Pope Gregory himself refused to eat until his monks returned from their work of handing out food.  He also made certain to dine with a dozen poor people at each meal. Because of his great respect for the poor, it was Pope Gregory and the Church that became the most respected --and obeyed force in Rome and across Italy.  From the time of Gregory onwards, the people looked to the Church for government rather than the distant and indifferent emperors in Constantinople.

Pope Gregory made many changes to the Mass, some of which remain today, The position of the Our Father in the Mass remains where Pope Gregory placed it.  Pope Gregory I was a prolific writer.  He may be responsible for the Gregorian chant, although some historians credit the music to Pope Gregory II.   Gregory died in 604 and was immediately proclaimed a saint by popular acclaim.    He is venerated also in the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches.  He is the patron saint of teachers, students, musicians and singers.

 The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
