Rare Antique 1920s Samuel Thompson & Sons of Smethwick Maltings Advertising Double Brass Inkwell

Details:

This is a rare and substantial Samuel Thompson & Sons Advertising Double brass inkwell in the from of a maltings. With pen rest in the courtyard inkwells in the hinged towers and and Container in the middle roof.

The base with Registration number Rd No 690538 dating the design to 1922. It also has one of its original pottery liners (but unfortunately broken, but could be glued together) the other liner is a Bakelite replacement (please see photos)

Well cast and detailed all hinges work ok Very well made, finished and detailed Left in uncleaned would polish very well if required.

Architectural Design & Features:

The desk stand is uniquely designed as a novelty architectural model of a traditional British maltings complex.

The Structure: It is a heavy, substantial piece of cast brass depicting industrial kiln towers and factory roofs.
The Inkwells: The double inkwells are hidden beneath the hinged roofs of the maltings towers, which lift to reveal the wells. Original versions usually contain pottery or ceramic liners inside.
Bonus Storage: The central roof area typically features a third hinged compartment designed to hold stamps, nibs, or small desk sundries.
Pen Rest: The open "courtyard" space at the front of the brass factory structure is designed to function as the pen tray.

Age and Authenticity:

While often described broadly as Victorian or Edwardian, these stands were officially registered in the early 1920s. Authentic versions bear a British Design Registration Number (Rd No 690638) stamped on the base, which officially dates the design to 1922. The stand measures approximately 28cm (11 inches) wide. Weight 2.7kg.
