Facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible in the Biblotheque Mazarine, Paris (Mazarin Library) in two volumes with an additional companion volume. Hardcover, original red full Morocco leather binding, 22 carat gold gilt decorated spine with applied green and brown Morocco leather pieces, gilt lettering, gilt edged front and back coves, gilt edges inside front and back covers, marbled endpapers, printed facsimile in color on laid paper, 630 pages (315 leaves) in publisher's linen covered slipcases with red leather label. Superb limited edition reproduction of the first book ever printed.
This facsimile is reproduced from the Bibliotheque Mazarine copy. The book may have been purchased by his librarian Naude during one of his trips to Germany (c. 1652). Mazarine's library was pillaged during the Fronde and his books were sold. Jourbert, parliamentarian and bibliophile, purchased the copy and later returned in it the Cardinal. Cardinal Mazarine bequeathed his library to the College of Four Nations, which he himself founded. It was this copy that was described as the first book ever printed by the antique enthusiast De Bure his Bibliographie instructive (1763). " Pur chance has led us to the discovery of this most previous edition of the Bible which we announce to the public under this title; we shall not waste a single moment giving it the first place, not only over all Bibles, but over all books."
