Description
Offered here is an exceptionally rare and visually striking 27.183 gram full slice of Northwest Africa 18601 (NWA 18601), an official Martian Shergottite meteorite discovered in Mali and purchased in 2026 by Craig Zlimen and Matthew Stream.
Nicknamed the “Stained Glass Martian,” this meteorite displays unusually translucent maskelynite domains created during an intense impact event on Mars. Under strong lighting, portions of the slice exhibit a remarkable glass-like translucency rarely seen in Martian material, giving the specimen its unique appearance.
The polished face reveals coarse dark green pyroxene crystals, black shock melt pockets, vesicles, and translucent maskelynite within a beautiful microgabbroic texture. Some associated pieces from the find also preserve partial fusion crust.

Petrographic analysis by C. Agee (UNM) identified pyroxene and maskelynite as the dominant phases, along with ilmenite, silica, Cl-rich apatite, and symplectites. The pyroxene exhibits strong zoning trends consistent with evolved pyroxene-phyric Martian basalts.
Shergottites are volcanic rocks formed on Mars billions of years ago before being ejected into space by powerful asteroid impacts and eventually falling to Earth.
