15 The Thing Seeds - Chinese Mustard Tubers
Biennial
Aka Tsa, Tsai, Cai, Swollen Stem Mustard, Big Stem Knob Mustard,
Thick Stem Round Tuber, Zha Cai, Sichuan, Szechwan Mustard Tuber,
Cha Tsai, Ja Choy, Spicy Radish.
The Thing is a bright green, knobbly, fist sized, swollen fleshy stem of a Mustard plant
that has a crunchy texture and a wonderful flavour.
The 3 to 5 inch diameter stems can be sliced into fried rice & stir fry dishes or it can be
harvested for the delicious Mustard greens to flavour soups and stir fries.
Originating from the Sichuan Province of Chine, The Thing is often pickled with salt and
very hot chilli pastes to make a kimchi like side dish called Zha Cai or to add flavour
to rice & noodles.
Easy to grow averaging only 60 cm (2 feet tall) and is a wonderfully strange plant to grow
and eat.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and plant out seedlings in very early Spring as warm weather will
cause it to bolt or late Summer to over winter as this the best method for this cool season
crop.
Germination in 7 to 14 days.
The ideal temperature to promote stem swelling is 7 to 15C (45 to 60F)
Harvest young leaves for Mustard greens or stems as soon as 60 days.
Matures in 120 days.
Full Sun to partial shade.
Water as needed to keep the soil moist.
