Up for sale is a classic antique 1919 Elgin 16 Size open-face pocket watch housed in a vintage Illinois Watch Case Co. "Spartan" nickel case.

DETAILS & SPECIFICATIONS:

• Manufacturer: Elgin National Watch Co.

• Serial Number: 21891903 (Dates to approx. 1919)

• Grade / Model: Grade 312 / 15 Jewels

• Movement Configuration: 16 Size, Pendant Set / Stem Wind

• Dial: White finish with bold black Roman numerals and small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock. Blued steel hands.

• Case: Illinois Watch Case Co. "Spartan" open-face case featuring Art Deco striped patterning and scrollwork edges. Case Serial: 817365.

CONDITION:

• Mechanical: Winds, sets, and runs smoothly. (Timekeeping accuracy has not been tested over 24 hours; an overhaul/service is always recommended for daily vintage use).

• Dial & Hands: Excellent presentation; clean and legible dial with sharp markings.

• Case: Normal light surface scuffs and wear consistent with age, but overall very sturdy with smooth threads closure.

Unlike a quartz watch, a mechanical timepiece doesn’t get its energy from a battery. Instead, the power that drives the hands around the dial, and also drives any additional complications like a date function, a moonphase or a chronograph, comes from the unwinding of a tightly coiled flat spring.

One of the beautiful things about a mechanical watch is that is requires interaction with its owner to function. That coiled mainspring will only provide power for a day or two (or sometimes shorter or longer) if you don’t keep it wound. A handwound watch is the purest form of the mechanical timepiece, which is part of its appeal.
