Since that time and throughout the XX century, people from all walks of life, be they great writers or everyday folks wishing to write down their thoughts, have savoured Tibaldi's elegant, reliable pens. In every collection Tibaldi blends tradition with innovative technical and design solutions. About the Collection:
In 2007 Tibaldi is inspired by history and dedicates a trilogy of exclusive pens to Knighthood and the Orders of Chivalry.
The first two pens of this aristocratic writing instruments collection are a virtuous tribute to The Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George and The Sovereign Order of Malta. The third and last pen of this trilogy, is dedicated to The Royal Order of Merit under the Title of Saint Ludwig.
Trilogy Order:
- Sacer Militaris Ordo Constantiniani Sancti Georgii (Constantinian Order of Saint George)
- Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM)
- San Ludovico (Royal Order of Merit under the Title of Saint Ludwig)
About the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM):
Origins in Jerusalem: The Sovereign Military Order of Malta began in the eleventh century in Jerusalem, where a small brotherhood founded a hospital to care for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Their mission was rooted in compassion, protection, and service to anyone in need. As conflict grew in the region, the brotherhood evolved into a disciplined military and medical order known as the Knights Hospitaller. They became protectors of the vulnerable and defenders of the sick, guided by the eight Beatitudes and eight virtues associated with the Order: loyalty, piety, honesty, courage, honour and glory, contempt for death, solidarity towards the poor and the sick, and respect for the Church.
Rise to Sovereignty: After the fall of the Crusader states, the Order relocated to Cyprus and then to Rhodes, transforming the island into a fortified stronghold. When Rhodes fell to the Ottomans, the Order was granted Malta in 1530. On Malta, they built one of the most advanced defensive and civic infrastructures in Europe. Their achievements included massive fortifications, underground cisterns, aqueducts, hospitals, and a naval fleet that protected Mediterranean trade. Their defense of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565 became legendary and defined their identity as warrior monks, engineers, and sovereign protectors.
How the Order Lost Malta: In 1798, during his Mediterranean campaign, Napoleon Bonaparte demanded entry for his fleet into Malta. The Order’s constitution prohibited them from taking up arms against fellow Christians, which left them unable to mount a full defense. Napoleon seized the island with minimal resistance, expelled the Knights, and placed Malta under French control. The Order was forced into exile and never regained territorial rule.
The Order Today:
The Order of Malta is one of the most unusual and enduring institutions in the world. Although it no longer governs Malta, it remains a sovereign subject of international law recognized by more than one hundred countries, and it issues diplomatic passports, coins, and postage stamps. Today the Order operates in more than one hundred twenty countries, providing disaster relief, medical care, refugee assistance, ambulance services, hospitals, clinics, and support for the elderly and disabled, while maintaining diplomatic relations across the world and preserving customs rooted in its medieval heritage, including ceremonial robes, investiture rituals, heraldry, and the eight‑pointed cross, with membership that includes professed knights, knights and dames of devotion, and lay members who uphold the Order’s values through service.
About the Pen:
Tibaldi's Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) limited edition is the second collection in the trilogy celebrating the chivalry world.
The Tibaldi Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) Pen is a precious work of art, finely etched with a pattern reproducing the coat of mail in medieval armors. The cap features a sleek image of a Maltese knight at the back, above a discreet engraving panel, allowing personalization with end-user's name or initials. The most famous symbol associated to the Order, the Maltese cross, decorates the barrel. It is hand-painted by skilled artist, Lorena Straffi. The 18kt Gold trim, offers a nice contrast with the carnelian stone adorning the cap’s ornament.
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM)'s striking nib is in 18K yellow gold, partly rhodium‑plated and engraved with the image of the Maltese cross. Rhodium is only applied inside the contours of the cross and inside the words, requiring the skill of an experienced goldsmith. The iridium point is welded to the gold and shaped according to the writing grade desired. Like the original Tibaldi nibs from the early twentieth century, each nib is engraved with the guarantee of first‑class writing quality, “1a Qualità”. The thickness of gold varies across the nib to maximize flexibility and thereby the writer's comfort.
Jewelers Finished Trim:
The Clou de Paris, consisting of repeating pyramid patterns, is an ancient decorative design, existing since the 16th century. In the 18th century, it was introduced into the watch industry as an elegant way to hide scratches and extend the life of metal surfaces. Each face of the pyramid is processed on two axes, resulting in a design with a high visual impact resembling a diamond shape and similarly reflecting the light. The work is extremely difficult and requires high-precision technology and instruments. The name most likely comes from the basalt stones used to pave Parisian cobblestone streets.
All the precious metal Clou de Paris components are produced and galvanized in Switzerland, the country responsible for producing the world's finest watches. Each part is inspected and hallmarked by the Swiss Federal Customs Office for the Control of Precious Metals in Geneva, a guarantee of the origin and high quality of the materials and finish. The Swiss hallmark is the only procedure of its type recognized all over the world.
Pen Cap: The sterling silver screw‑on cap showcases an engraved Maltese knight, a discreet personalization panel, and a carnelian gemstone set into the gold‑trimmed top ornament.
Barrel: Finely etched with a pattern reproducing medieval coat‑of‑mail armor, featuring a hand‑painted Maltese cross by artist Lorena Straffi.
Clip: The tie-shaped clip is reminiscent of Tibaldi pens from the early 1900s, but its sophisticated snap mechanism and roller make it easier to insert into a pocket.
