Rare 1962 Leather-Bound Missale Romanum – Gift from Pope Paul VI to Pannonhalma Basilica (photo No. 3)
This is a beautiful 1962–1964 edition of the Roman Missal (Missale Romanum), a pre-Vatican II edition – one of the last editions before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, representing the traditional Tridentine liturgy.
It has a unique Hungarian dedication on a full page before the title (, it reads:
“Szentséges Atyánk
VI. Pál Pápa ajándéka
a Pannonhalmi Bazilikának
MCMLXIV”
This visually striking inscription marks the book as a papal gift to the historic Pannonhalma Basilica.
This copy is extremely uncommon due to its papal dedication and direct connection to a major Hungarian basilica. A perfect addition for collectors of liturgical books, papal memorabilia, or Hungarian ecclesiastical history.
The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, the cradle of Hungarian Christianity, and an important intellectual center. Its famous school looks back on a thousand-year history, and it is home to one of the largest monastic libraries in the world. The monastery was founded in 996 by Grand Prince Géza in honor of Saint Martin of Tours. In 1541, Pannonhalma was granted the rank of an archabbey, but during the Ottoman wars it was transformed into a frontier fortress, and monastic life was suspended for half a century. The significance of Pannonhalma is also shown by the fact that Pope John Paul II visited the abbey on the 1000th anniversary of its foundation.
