RADIAN 1228-16 Diaphragm Pair For ALTEC 1-inch Throat Driver Unused
Product Description
This is a Radian diaphragm for ALTEC 1-inch drivers, designed for use with 1-inch throat drivers such as the ALTEC 802/806/808/902/604. Made from a traditional aluminum alloy, it produces a natural sound. The Mylar film edge reduces resonance compared to metal tangential edges, resulting in a more natural sound quality and significantly increased power handling.
Impedance: 16 Ω.
Two-piece set.
Power rating: 50W (continuous) (typically 100W).
All Radian diaphragms are made from aluminum alloy sheets formed by spinning and then specially hardened. As shown in the diagram below (top), a diaphragm made by a spatula is thinner in the center and thicker at the periphery, resulting in greater strength for the same mass and an optimal shape. A typical stamped diaphragm, on the other hand, is thicker in the center, as shown in the diagram (bottom). This shape makes a big difference in terms of resonance. Imagine pulling a rubber band with both hands and then moving your hands up and down. The rubber band corresponds to the diaphragm, and the hands correspond to the voice coil. With a stamped diaphragm, the center is heavy, so it's like having a weight attached to the middle of the rubber band. This weight moves independently of the movement of the hands. This is resonance. Resonance not only deteriorates frequency characteristics but can also cause intermodulation distortion.
A spatula-shaped diaphragm is equivalent to a tightly stretched rubber band, allowing the diaphragm to faithfully follow the movement of the voice coil. Radian diaphragmshave been proven to have minimal intermodulation distortion through FFT measurements. The use of Mylar film edges, which eliminate unwanted reflections and resonance, also contributes to this excellent sound quality. Recently, the natural sound quality of aluminum, a material distinct from titanium and environmentally harmful beryllium, has also been rediscovered. This is recommended for those dissatisfied with the sound of newer drivers.

This graph shows the characteristics of the same driver with only the diaphragm replaced with a Radian 1245-16. You can see that, despite a 5 dB increase in output at 2 kHz, the second and third harmonic distortions at 4 kHz and 6 kHz have been dramatically reduced. Furthermore, ultra-harmonic distortion, a particular concern among audiophiles, has been suppressed to an undetectable level.
Some people may feel that the high frequencies are not being heard despite the actual increase in sound pressure, but this is often due to the misunderstanding that harmonic distortion components are being mistaken for high frequencies. Once calibration is complete and low-distortion sound becomes the standard, it is unlikely that the sound will ever return to its original state.

Here too, you can see that despite the output increasing at 2kHz/2.5kHz, the distortion due to intermodulation has been drastically reduced.
This intermodulation distortion has a different effect from the harmonic components emitted by musical instruments, and therefore has a more adverse effect than harmonic distortion.
