About the EL12

Introduced in July 1938 as part of Telefunken's harmonious E-series steel-tube lineup, the EL12 delivers 18 watts of audio output - nearly double the power of the earlier AL5 and EL5 it replaced. Designed as a drop-in upgrade for circuits using standard output pentodes like the EL11, the EL12 allowed builders to achieve twice the output power with minimal circuit modifications. The gray spray-metal coating provides electromagnetic shielding and the distinctive appearance characteristic of German steel-series construction. Variants marked with voltage suffixes (EL12/325, EL12/375, etc.) indicate higher voltage ratings, while this unmarked example operates at the standard 250V specification. The EL12 saw widespread deployment in 452 documented radio models from 1938 through the late 1950s before being superseded by the EL34 in 1950.
